Many people who are familiar with the vibrant blue liquor, blue curacao, are often surprised to discover an island bearing the same name.
The largest island among the ABCs of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, Curacao covers 170 square miles. Its capital, Willemstad, is distinctly Dutch colonial in architecture, and offers an assortment of tourist activities include shopping centers, the highest bridge in the Caribbean, and a number of museums. Natural sites on Curacao include state parts and the Hato Caves, made of coral and limestone and home to long nose fruit bats.
A visit to the island would not be complete with dining on Dutch-influenced cuisine and sipping curacao, made from bitter oranges. There are plenty of places to buy the namesake alcohol to take back to friends and family.
